Viola Wing-Lam Cheung is a soprano born in Hong Kong. She was seen as Königin der Nacht from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in 18 cities of the Netherlands and Belgium. After singing the roles of Liu in Puccini’s Turandot in the Netherlands and La Fée in Massenet’s Cendrillon in Trentino Music Festival in Italy, Cheung made her debut at the Dutch National Opera in 2023 as one of the six Mädchen in Kurt Weill’s opera, Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny. Cheung’s performances include the soprano solo parts in Mahler Symphony No.4, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Bach’s Johannes Passion and various cantatas. She was invited by the International Vocal Competition of ‘s Hertogenbosch in various Concert Series and Masterclasses.
With an extended vocal range and timber, Cheung made her voice heard in various genres. Cheung sang in more than 30 world premieres of new compositions, including two main roles, The Light and Bernadette in new operas, Seconds of Fear and Goldilocks in Amsterdam from the Opera Forward Festival at the Dutch National Opera in 2017 and 2024 respectively, as well as solo and ensemble pieces at the November Festival, O-Festival, Dag in de Branding Festival, Rewire Festival, Composers’ Festivals of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and three country tours in collaborations with Silbersee, Doelen Ensemble and NKK NXT in the past 4 years. She was a performing guest in the 70th anniversary of Chinese National Day ceremony in Floriada Expo Amsterdam, and was invited as a jury member of the Water Cube Cup Chinese Song Contest in 2022 and 2023.
Cheung graduated with a Master in New Audience and Innovative Practice from Royal Conservatoire The Hague and another Master in Classical Singing in Codarts. She studied with Maartje Rammeloo, Charlotte Riedijk and Ira Siff, and received masterclasses from Margareet Honig, Rosemary Joshua, Andrew Watts, Eva Maria Westbroek, Roberta Alexander, Luciana Serra, Lynn Dawson and John Fulljames. She was awarded the scholarship of Best Student in Concentrated Studies by Hong Kong Baptist University in 2013 and was featured in the music talent documentary, Young Music Makers, by Radio and Television Hong Kong in 2015.
