Winner of the first prize and audience favorite award at the 2019 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in the Puerto Rico district, soprano Shayleen Norat from Coamo, Puerto Rico, is an alumna of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. There she received a Master of Music and Performer Diploma under the tutelage of world-renowned soprano Carol Vaness. During her time there, she performed the roles of Countess Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Maria in Bernstein's West Side Story. Previous roles include Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Ludmila in The Bartered Bride, La Suora Infermiera in Suor Angelica, Une pastourelle in L’enfant et les sortileges, and Rosaura in the zarzuela Los Gavilanes. She has also performed leading roles in opera workshop scenes including La rondine, Manon, Roméo et Juliette, and La bohème. She is an alumna of the Prague Summer Nights Young Artists Music Festival, the Miami Summer Music Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival and School, where she performed the role of Mrs. Johannes “Ma” Zegner in Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up. She recently won first prize at the National Society of Arts and Letters 2020 Competition (Bloomington Chapter) and second prize at the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Graduate Division 2020 Competition.
