Bio

Shanice Skinner is a Canadian lyric soprano from Nova Scotia, Canada. In 2022, she graduated from Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag with a Master of Music in Classical Vocal Studies. Her previous education took place in her home country, having graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with an Honours Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and an Opera Diploma in 2017 and 2020, respectively. In summer 2022, Shanice originated the role of Mary Thompson in the acclaimed Canadian music drama The Bells of Baddeck (Lorna MacDonald and Dean Burry), a production in partnership with The University of Toronto and Parks Canada. In August 2021, Shanice placed second in the Emerging Artists stream for voice at the 2021 National Music Festival of Canada. Shanice has recently performed as a semifinalist for international vocal competitions, including the 2022 Voice of Black Opera in Birmingham, England (The Black British Classical Foundation), and 2023 Les Grandes Voix Lyriques D'Afrique in Paris, France (Africa Lyric's Opera). Shanice is a member of the professional vocal ensemble Consensus Vocalis, performing in both the ensemble's concerts and their opera collaborations with Nederlandse Reisopera, such as the 2023 Die Zauberflöte production (Mozart) and the upcoming 2024 Orphée et Eurydice (Gluck). In terms of other vocal ensemble work, Shanice has been selected as one of the eight vocalists to form the 2024 Nederlands Kamerkoor NXT traineeship ensemble. In Fall 2024, Shanice can be seen as Suor Osmina in Nederlandse Reisopera's production of Suor Angelica.
