Bio

Mezzo-soprano Itzel Medecigo studied a Bachelor in Belcanto at the Superior School of Music of the National Institute of Arts of Mexico City, and a Master Program in Music Performance at the Utrecht Conservatorium in The Netherlands. She developed her artistry and technique with master professionals like Ignacio Mendoza, Peter Harrison, Dobrinka Yankova, Nadine Secunde, Graciela Araya, Ljuba Orfenova, Susan Young, Jard van Nes, Eva Maria Westbroek, Larissa Diadkova, Yamina Maamar, Nicoletta Oliveri, among others.

In 2007 she was awarded the “Best Interpretation of Mexican Art Song” prize during the Maritza Alemán Singing Competition. In 2013 and 2015 Itzel was selected to be part of The Talent Development Program of the Dutch National Opera.

Having given recitals in The Netherlands, Gemanry, Austria, Mexico and Australia, Itzel has also sung in World Premières, like “Over”, an opera by Rick van Veldhuizen commissioned for the Opera Forward Festival 2016 where she sang the role of “Zee”; and “Requiem”, commissioned to Gavin Bryars by The Dutch National Ballet where Itzel sang the solo Alto part.

In the summer of 2021, her interpretation of the main role of “Carmen” by G. Bizet at Opera Spanga was received with lots of praise by the press and the audiences. In 2024 Itzel Made her debut at Het Concergebouw with the Third Symphony of Mahler in celebration of the 200th birthday of the oldest orchestra of The Netherlands, the USConcert.
