Hailed as “witty, adorable, and one to watch” (Lauri’s List), soprano Brooke Iva Lohman is an active recitalist and performer throughout California. Lauded for her clear, high range, crisp, clean fioritura, and moving character portrayals, she is quickly gaining attention as an adept interpreter of some of the most demanding coloratura repertoire for soprano.
In the local scene, Brooke has sung with many Southern California opera companies, including Opera Santa Barbara, Pacific Opera Project, Glendale Opera, Orange County Opera, and Independent Opera, singing lead roles as well as covering other characters. Notable performances include Adele (Die Fledermaus), Monica (The Medium), the title role in the West Coast premiere of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Snow Maiden (Snegúrochka), Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte), Olympia (Les contes d’Hoffmann), Atalanta (Serse), Cunégonde (Candide), Madame Goldentrill (Der Schauspieldirektor), Gilda (Rigoletto), and three of Gilbert & Sullivan’s well-known heroines: Mabel (Pirates of Penzance), Josephine (HMS Pinafore), and Yum-Yum (The Mikado). From 2013 to 2015, she was a Young Artist with Riverside Lyric Opera, covering roles such as Suor Genoveffa (Suor Angelica), and Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi). On the international stage, she has traveled to Germany to perform the Lieder of Richard Strauss at the Schloss Freudental in Allensbach for their “Wine &...” concert series, and at the Hochschule für Musik, Trossingen.
No stranger to the modern repertoire, Brooke has a love for new music and has performed the works of local composers. In Winter of 2020, she sang "Activist One" in the premiere of Andrew Leggett's opera scene, "You may forget but let me tell you this: someone in some future time will think of [...]" an opera in stolen quotations, inspired by the life and work of Valerie Solanas. She is also set to premiere the lead role in Peter Wing Healey's The Tree, with Mesopotamian Opera. In Summer 2021, she will travel to St. Petersburg, FL to sing the title role in Paul Richards' 2009 opera, The Loathly Lady.
The concert stage has seen her as a soprano soloist in many choral masterworks including Faure’s Requiem, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Bach’s Ein feste Burg, Rutter’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Mozart’s Requiem. In ensemble work, she spent three seasons singing with the renowned performing group Pacific Chorale under the direction of John Alexander, is an active Christmas caroler, and performs for out-reach programs at schools across Southern California.
During the pandemic, Brooke became a semi-finalist for the NYIOP International Vocal Competition and the Camille Coloratura Awards. She participated in several virtual concerts with the SoCal Vocalist Relief Fund which helped raise money for singers who had lost income due to the COVID crisis. She reprised the role of Queen of the Night for California Baptist University's virtual presentation of The Magic Flute, and portrayed Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) and Frasquita (Carmen), in SMC Opera Theater's Opera Scenes. Working with Independent Opera Company for their "Stars of IOC" LiveStream series, Brooke also presented a solo recital of arias and sang in a concert showcasing the work of Sergei Rachmaninoff.
Brooke was named the Cal-Western Region Winner for the 2020 NATS Artist Awards competition and was awarded the Irvin Bushman Award, is a recipient of the Anna Sosenko Assist Trust grant, the Opera Buffs grant, the Opera Guild of Southern California scholarship, the Northridge Arts Council scholarship, and is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda. She received a Master of Music degree with distinction in Vocal Performance from California State University, Northridge, a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from California Baptist University, and currently studies with Shigemi Matsumoto. She lives in beautiful Pasadena, CA with her husband and three cats (Freddie, Felix, and Lili).
