Carolina Varela, Italian-Ecuadorian soprano. Began her singing and musical studies at the Franz Liszt Conservatory and acting studies with Pedro Saad and Irina Gamauyunova in Quito (Ecuador). Her first roles were Serpina in La Serva Padrona by GB Pergolesi, Carolina in Il Matrimonio Segreto by D. Cimarosa and Juana in El Señor Don Bernardo de Legarda at Casa de la Cultura Theater in Ecuador. Carolina obtained her degree in singing with honors, thereafter, she underwent further instruction under the guidance of Mirella Freni in Modena during the Annual Lyric Opera Course of CUBEC (Centro Universale del Bel Canto) and Raina Kabaivanska at the Accademia Chigiana di Siena. Carolina attended the Bruna Baglioni and Alberto Paloscia (Rome), Montserrat Caballé (Zaragoza) and Jaume Aragall (Barcellona) masterclasses. She studied the Mozart repertoire with Claudio Desderi at Santa Cecilia Opera Studio in Rome, Baroque and Bel Canto repertoire with Sonia Prina, Lella Cuberli, Vitorio Terranova at Accademia del Bel Canto Rodolfo Celletti in Martina Franca. She continues her vocal development with Paola Leolini and Mariella Devia in Rome.
Carolina made her European debut as Elisetta in Matrimonio Segreto by D. Cimarosa in Ankara, Izmir, Istanbul and Prague with the World Youth Orchestra directed by Damiano Giuranna. She was later invited to participate in the Festival Transeuropéennes in Rouen, France performing a Rinaldo highlights concert. Carolina was the soprano soloist in the Stabat Mater by G.B. Pergolesi performed under the Fabio Ciofini's baton with Camerata Barocca W. Hermans orchestra, then she was Maria in Laudes Evangelii by Valentino Bucchi. In front of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican, she performed La Despedida de Azucena by Joaquin Rodrigo. She was the soprano soloist in the Mozart's Requiem in Budapest with Vaç Symphony Orchestra (Pal Farkas conductor).
In 2010 Varela was the soprano soloist in the Symphony No. 2 by Gustav Mahler at Casa de la Musica in Quito, conducted by Patricio Aizaga. She was the Queen of the Night inThe Magic Flute by W.A. Mozart in a Barcelona Opera Studio's production. As the winner of the Voce All'Opera Competition received the role of Adina in L'Elisir d'Amore by G. Donizetti performed at the Rosetum theater in Milan under the Michele Spotti baton and stage director Gianmaria Aliverta. She was Adina again in Tuscany with the Nuova Europa orchestra, Fabiano Fiorenzani (conductor) and Alessandro Calamai (stage direction), in Belgium at the Muziekcentrum De Bijloke (Gent) Geert Soenen (conductor), in the Serpente Aureo theater in Le Marche with the Benedetto Marcello Orchestra M. Gatti (conductor) Ettore Nova (stage director). She was Rosina in The Barber of Seville by Rossini in Gent, Belgium, Geert Soenen (conductor). Carolina was Polly in Die Dreigroschenoper by Kurt Weill with Adriana Morelli (stage direction) and M. Gualtieri (conductor) and (second Madchen) in Aufstieg und fall der Stadt Mahagonny at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma with Graham Vick (stage director) and John Axelrod (conductor). She was invited by the Philharmonic Orchestra FAO Staff Coop to sing in the Mozart concert arias Concert in the Accademia Filarmonica Romana directed by P . Rossi Gastaldi. In August 2015 Carolina was Violetta in Traviata by G. Verdi in the Taormina's Teatro Antico with Enrico Stinchelli (stage director) and Silvia C. Rizzolo (conductor). On December 20017 she was invited by the Orchestra Sinfonica Abruzzese as a soloist for a New Year's Eve Concert Tour in the most important theaters of the Abruzzo region under the baton of Sesto Quatrini. On June 2018 miss Varela was “Ligia” on the “Eunice” by L.H.Salgado world premier in Ecuador under the Michael Meissner baton and Javier Andrade stage direction. On march 2019 Carolina was “Gilda” again at “Festival del Ridotto” in Stradella (Pavia) under the G.Vaccaro baton and Mario De Carlo stage director. On May 2019 Carolina has been “La Giovane Novizia” in “The fiery angel” by Prokof’ev in Teatro dell’Opera di Roma under the Alejo Perez baton and Emma Dante stage director. In August 2021 she was "Violetta" in G. Verdi's "Traviata" at the Amphitheater Cordeschi for the Mythos Opera Festival and in "Villa Contarini" (Padua) with the "Garda Sinfonietta" Orchestra conducted by Anna Brandolini and Roberto Scandiuzzi stage director. On October 2022 Miss Varela was The Coriphèe in “Alceste” by C.W.Gluck under the G.Capuano baton and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui stage director and coreographer. Miss Varela is the “soprano voice” for the Masserati’s short film “Companions on a Journey” by Ferzan Ozpetek. Since 2021 work as a Volunteer for the Progressio foundation with projects for cultural development in Ecuador.
Carolina has won the Wanda Zingarelli and Sergio Secci awards, the International prize and the Maison des Artistes gold medal in La Sapienza University in Rome.
