Soprano and New Jersey native Samantha Lax has received praise for her winning soubrette voice and scene-stealing charm. She has had the pleasure of making her performance debuts at OperaDelaware in “Suor Angelica” (Prima Sorella Cercatrice), St. Petersburg Opera in “Die Zauberflöte” (2nd Spirit), and Indianapolis Opera in the American premiere of Jonathan Dove's “Mansfield Park” (Maria Bertram). Other opera credits include the title role in Massenet's Cendrillon, Lisette (La Rondine), Rosalinda & Adele (Die Fledermaus), Pamina & Papagena (Die Zauberflöte), Jade Boucher & Sister Catherine (Dead Man Walking), Susanna & Barbarina (Le nozze di Figaro), Miss Wordsworth (Albert Herring), Monica & Mrs. Gobineau (The Medium), Antonia (Les contes d'Hoffmann), and Cobweb (A Midsummer Night's Dream).
Samantha has also performed in operas for children, both original and reduced from full operas. Those include Rossini's “The Barber of Seville” (Rosina) & "La Cenerentola" (Clorinda), Mozart's “The Magic Flute” (Pamina), and John Davies' “Pinocchio” (Lady Blue, Cat, & Olympia) .
In the 2021-2022 season, Samantha is set to make her debut with Baltimore Concert Opera in Menotti's "The Medium" as Mrs. Gobineau. She is returning to OperaDelaware to join their chorus for "Le nozze di Figaro" and to Quisisana Resort in their productions of Mozart's "Così fan tutte" and Sondheim's "A Little Night Music".
In 2019, Miss Lax was named the winner of the Nebraska district for the 2019-2020 Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions. She also was awarded first place in the Lyra New York International Vocal Competition in the "Traditional Opera Division".
Samantha is a founding member of the professional choral group, The Same Stream, directed by Dr. James Jordan. The Same Stream's focus is performing and recording the works of living composers including Paul Mealor, Thomas LaVoy, Patrick Hawes, Cortlandt Matthews, and more. The choir currently has four full length albums, “Songs of the Questioner”, “Serenity: The Music of Paul Mealor”, "The Fire of Love", and "To Hold the Light" available for purchase and streaming. Samantha holds her Master of Music from the New England Conservatory and her Bachelor of Music from Westminster Choir College.
