Blessed with “a lustrous voice, full of expression” (The Guardian), British Mezzo-soprano Angela Simkin, is a unique and thrilling artist with a burnished tone and arresting vocal quality. Established as an ‘outstanding’ Handelien, she is particularly praised for her coloratura roles.
As a Jette Parker Young Artist at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, her roles included Mercédès Carmen, Mlle Dangeville Adriana Lecouvreur, the title role in Handel’s Oreste (at Wilton’s Music Hall), The Herdswoman Jenufa, Second Lady Die Zauberflöte, Annina Der Rosenkavalier (conducted by Andris Nelsons), Tebaldo Don Carlo (conducted by Bertrand de Billy) and Flora Bervoix La traviata. She has returned to sing Herdswoman Jenůfa and Flosshilde Das Rheingold / Götterdämmerung (conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano and broadcast on BBC Radio 3).
She joined the Ensemble of the Landestheater Linz in 2022, where recent and upcoming roles have included the title role in Rinaldo, Lola Cavalleria Rusticana, Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro (conducted by Markus Poschner), Suzuki Madama Butterfly, Rosina Il barbiere di Siviglia, Hedwige Guillaume Tell and Prince Orlofsky Die Fledermaus.
At The Grange Festival, she has sung Hermia A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Phoebe Meryll The Yeomen of the Guard and Meg Page Falstaff. Other engagements have included Second Woman Lessons in Love and Violence at Stars of the White Nights Festival, St Petersburg, Mercédès Carmen for Welsh National Opera and The Angel in Rubensteins’s The Demon for Chelsea Opera Group.
Concert engagements have included Lucilla Il vologeso and Messiah for The Mozartists, Siegrune Die Walküre with the London Philharmonic Orchestra with Vladamir Jurowski, Berlioz Les Nuits d’Été and Mahler Kindertotenlieder with Lucy Colquhoun for recitals in the Crush Room of The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and at St John’s Smith Square, Messiah with London Handel Orchestra and for Raymond Gubbay at London’s Royal Festival Hall, the Nelson Mass at Snape Maltings, and most recently, star soloist for the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra’s New Year’s Day concert at the Tonhalle, Düsseldorf.
Looking ahead, in addition to her commitments in Linz, she will make her debut on the famous See-Bühne of Bregenz Festival as Flora Bervoix La traviata.
Her recordings include Dorcas Haddon Hall with the BBC Concert Orchestra on Dutton Epoch SACD, selected as Critic’s Choice by Opera News, Herdswoman Jenůfa for Opus Arte Arte DVD / Blu-Ra, Lucilla Il Vologeso with The Mozartists on Signum CD and Second Lady Die Zauberflöte for Opus Arte DVD / Blu-Ray (selected as Editor’s Choice in Gramophone for February 2022).
