Matthew DiBattista

Tenor, Teacher, Conductor

Described as “brilliant” by Opera News, American tenor, Matthew DiBattista, is continually in demand on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. He has sung with such conductors as Charles Dutoit, Andris Nelsons, Enrique Mazzola, and Sir Andrew Davis. Mr. DiBattista has performed over 70 different roles to date spanning the operatic repertoire. In 2024, Mr. DiBattista will make his Carnegie Hall debut as the Teacher in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a recording on Deutsche Grammophon. He will also make his San Francisco Opera debut as the Doctor in A Handmaid’s Tale. He has been on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera and performed several seasons with Lyric Opera of Chicago singing Normano in Lucia di Lammermoor, Esquire in Parsifal and others. Recent engagements include the Captain in Corigliano's Lord of Cries with Odyssey Opera, Triquet in Eugene Onegin with The Santa Fe Opera, Beppe in I Pagliacci and Monostatos in ‎Die Zauberflöte with Palm Beach Opera. Matthew has also been an active and sought after voice teacher and conductor for over 30 years. Mr. DiBattista holds a Master of Music degree and Artist Diploma in voice and opera from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music studying with Thomas Baresel as well as a Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University where he studied with Penelope Bitzas. He sought further vocal study in Lucca Italy with Lorenzo Malfatti and at Tanglewood with Phyllis Curtin, Margo Garrett and Warren Jones. He is certified under the Vocal Pedagogy Professional Workshop at Boston Conservatory and has taught voice at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, DeSales University, Lehigh University, Indian Hill Music Center and Boston College High School. Over the last 25 years he has frequently been Voice Faculty, Director of Opera and Guest Artist in Residence at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. A well-known Adjudicator and Master Clinician, he has taught and coached singers all over the country and most recently as Lecturer Voice Faculty at Boston University since 2017.

As a conductor, Mr. DiBattista recently conducted a production of Mozart’s Impresario for Enigma Chamber Opera where he has been Music Director since its founding. He was Director of Choral Activities at DeSales University in PA, and Director of the University of Cincinnati Men’s and Women’s Choruses while a Graduate Assistant in Conducting at the Conservatory. He had the privilege of conducting the world-renowned Dale Warland Singers in a Masterclass by Dale Warland and was Assistant Conductor to Ann Howard Jones at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Mr. DiBattista was Director of the Boston College High School Chorus, a chorus he founded. Having studied conducting with Dr. Jones at BU, he was invited to tour Souillac, France and NYC as a member of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers, recording two albums on the Telarc Label. He has been Assistant Conductor/Music Director and voice teacher of the Trinitarian Congregational Choir for 18 years.
