Henry Herbert is a 2nd-year bass-baritone in the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University pursing a B.M. in Voice and Opera Performance and a minor in German Language. Mr. Herbert studies under the tutelage of noted American vocal pedagogue and teacher Theresa Brancaccio. At Northwestern, he is an active board member and performer in the undergraduate-run opera company OPUS (Opera Projects for Undergraduate Students). During his time with OPUS, Mr. Herbert has performed roles such as Don Pedro in Barbieri's El barberillo de Lavapiés and Le Roi in Massenet's Cendrillon. With Northwestern Opera Theater, he has made chorus appearances in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Handel's Alcina (bass soloist). This season, he will be in the chorus for Northwestern Opera Theater's production of Mozart's Così fan tutte.
Previously, Mr. Herbert studied voice with the noted American soprano Phyllis Treigle and emerging tenor Mark-Anthony Thomas at the pre-professional conservatory NOCCA (New Orleans Center for Creative Arts) where he made scene appearances in roles such as Mr. Gobineau in Menotti's The Medium, Don Alfonso in Mozart's Così fan tutte, and Pandolfe in Bernstein's Candide. At NOCCA, he also served as a student accompanist.
Mr. Herbert is also an experienced church musician, serving as a Minister of Music for churches in the New Orleans and Greater Chicago areas. For the 2023/2024 academic year, he is serving as a fellow in Liturgical Music Direction under Dr. Rudy Marcozzi in the Christ the Teacher Institute at the Northwestern University Sheil Catholic Center.
Outside of singing, Mr. Herbert is also a pianist and organist.
