Mr. Yan has traveled extensively throughout the U.S. to perform a variety of roles, including the lead in the most representative of his Chinese classical Peking opera style. His performance was praised by audiences and critics (including James R. Oestreich of The New York Times, and other publications, such as The Philadelphia Inquirer) etc...
Since 1996, he has used his talents in a new way; studying voice, acting, and performance in the western style. He enrolled in the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in Voice Performance. In 2008, he received the Professional Diploma in Voice Performance from the Mannes College of Music. His professional vocal training is under Professor Thomas Cultice. He acquired hands-on experience in Western opera and acting, succeeding in leading tenor roles in opera scenes in workshops. He now uses his skills in singing both Western opera and Peking opera, innovating a rejuvenating, refreshed new performing style. Mr. Yan is excited to make an even greater impact with audiences in the U.S.
Mr. Yan was born into an artist family that was raised under the Chinese Peking Opera style. Son of prominent Chinese Opera performers Shao Peng and Ms. Zhang, Shao Lou, as well as the nephew of “Queen of The National Opera”, Hui Zhu (acknowledged as the best heir to the School of Maestro Mei, Lan Fang), Mr. Yan is the grandson of Maestro Yan, Jiu Peng, the founder of the Yan School of Performing Arts in China. Mr. Yan was thus raised in an artistic family and grew into the third generation’s heir of Yan Style in China. He began studying basic martial arts with Mr. Chou Yun Liang and Chinese opera singing and acting with his parents since he was a young child. He has also received training under distinguished maestros in "lao sheng" (the male roles from middle age to elderly) Chen, Ta-whul, Cheh, Chin-sheng, and martial arts -combat on stage under well-known coaches: Li Sheng-bin; Li Chiu-sen; and Zhang, Erh-peng.
Mr. Yan won “The Most Outstanding Asian Artist Award” in Lincoln Center, sang in Alice Tully Hall and Avery Fisher Hall by Yan School Performing Arts in Peking Opera. Becoming a versatile classical singer since he emigrated from China to the U.S., Roles: Alfredo (La Traviata), the title of (Werther), Des Grieux (Manon), Tamino & Monostato (The Magic Flute), Duke (Rigoletto), the title of (Faust), Don Jose (Carmen), Cavaradossi (Tosca), Nemorino (L’ElisirD’amore). Since 2009, enrolled at BC in CUNY, sang Mr. Upfold (Albert Herring), Curzio (Le nozze di Figaro). BMUS of pursuing at BC since 2014, sang tenor soloist (Carmina Burana). His voice instructor has studied with Prof. Mark Schnaible. In 2018, Mr. Yan performed the role of Ottavio (Don Giovanni) with New York Lyric Opera Theater at Carnegie Hall and the National Opera Center.
Among Mr. Yan's accomplishments, he has rendered the lead role in Cao Xue Qin: a worldwide celebrity, the author’s story of “Dream of The Red Chamber”, a very famous legend in China and international, operatic television series in China. He was named best actor for his performance in Cao Cao & Yang Xiu. He won the first place of the award at the National Chinese Opera Competition for Young Artists on a special Feature Program on TV in China. Mr. Yan has also received numerous awards in Chinese Opera and television contests over the years. They were including the Chinese Opera Association’s Golden Shield Award, the National Plum Blossom Award, Shanghai’s White Jade Basket Award, the First Award for a national television series, and Flying Award on TV series. He’s a member of the Chinese Opera Association, assistant director of the School of Yan Chinese Opera Research Center.
Mr. Yan was also invited to perform the leading male role in a contemporary new project: “Earl Duo’s Choice – Princess or Kingdom?” In which he co-produced and directed with colleagues of National Theatre in Republic of China (R.O. C) (Tai Wan, Tai Pei). Mr. Yan was invited to perform in the new production, “Butterfly’s Love for Flowers,” staged in the Republic of China (R.O.C) National Theatre.
