Rachel Magil is a lyric coloratura soprano from Rochester, New York. She graduated from Ithaca College School of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, studying under the tutelage of mezzo-soprano, Dawn Pierce. Recently, she debuted the lead role of Violetta Valéry this summer in Caltagirone, Italy, in Verdi’s “La Traviata”, at the Mediterranean Opera Studio, conducted by Leo Catalanotto and directed by Jack Li Vigni. She had the pleasure of working with the acclaimed Romanian soprano, Nelly Miricioiu, who helped her refine the role. This summer she was also involved with the Rochester Summer Opera and performed in their annual Opera Under The Stars concert, where she played Musetta in a scene from Puccini’s “La Bohème”.
Last winter, she attended the “dall’Aria all’audiZione” program in Vercelli, Italy where she worked with a prestigious faculty, including Patrizia Ciofi (soprano), Gabriella Sborgi (mezzo), Chris Merritt (tenor), Federico Sacchi (bass), as well as stage director, Stefano Vizioli and physiotherapist, Carles Expósito. While in Italy she performed Juliette’s Waltz with the Italian Academy Orchestra at Teatro San Carlo, Arona with Maestro Damiano Cerutti at the podium. She also performed Gilda’s “Caro nome” at the Teatro Civico di Vercelli. Rachel studied as a Young Artist at the Trentino Music Festival in Mezzano, Italy in the summer of 2022, where she studied with soprano, Chelsea Bonagura. She performed the role of Papagena in their production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, conducted by world renowned maestro, Arthur Fagen. In addition, she covered the role of Pamina. This is Rachel’s second performance in this opera, as she played Zweite Dame in Ithaca College’s mainstage Spring production of Die Zauberflöte, conducted by Christopher Zemilauskas. Rachel has also performed in opera scenes from Don Pasquale (Norina), Le nozze di Figaro (Susanna), Il matrimonio segreto (Carolina), Rigoletto (Gilda), and La Traviata (Violetta).
During the summer of 2021 she participated in the Opera Viva! Italy Young Artist program, and was a finalist in the Roberto DeSimone Memorial Aria Competition, as well as being a semi-finalist in the Camerata Bardi International Vocal Competition and this year's Music International Grand Prix Competition. She is currently studying in Rochester with her voice teacher, soprano, Susanna Adams.
