Tenor Anthony Varner is an emerging young professional from Colorado currently based in the
Germantown, MD area. He sang as a studio artist with Opera Fort Collins where he took part in
outreach -- performing art song, aria, and musical theater pieces throughout the community.
Alongside the outreach, he sang in the chorus for Opera Fort Collins’ productions of Cosi Fan
Tutte, Daughter of the Regiment, and Lucia di Lammermoor. His mainstage performances
include the roles of Il Podesta (La finta giardiniera), Alfred (Die Fledermaus), and Edward (La
cambiale di matrimonio) with the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory Opera and
the role of Fenton (Falstaff) with the University of Northern Colorado. In addition, he has
performed with Boulder Opera as El Remendado (Carmen), with Emerald City Opera as multiple
characters in Speed Dating Tonight, and covered the role of Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) with
LandLocked Opera.
In professional engagements, Anthony has worked extensively as an opera chorister in
Landlocked Opera’s Die Zauberflöte; Opera Colorado’s Lucia di Lammermoor and La Fanciulla
del West; Opera Classica Europa’s Nabucco, Die Fledermaus, and Tosca; and Loveland Opera
Theatre’s HMS Pinafore.
While he performs both classic and contemporary operatic works, he is particularly fond of
newer works. His premiere engagements include Elon in the workshop premiere of Anna Brake’s
The Nightingale and the Rose, vocal soloist in the world premiere of James Stephenson’s
Dialogue of Self and Soul saxophone arrangement and the role of Pastor Patterson in the world
premiere of David Conte’s Stonewall.
