Mary Reins is a soprano from Virginia Beach, VA. She is a sophomore at the Eastman School of Music studying under Professor Nicole Cabell. She is also a graduate of the Governor’s School for the Arts’ Vocal Music Department in the studio of Shelly Milam-Ratliff, where she sang the roles of Diana in Orpheus in the Underworld and the Usher in Trial by Jury. Mary’s formative performing began with the Virginia Children’s Chorus, where she was a solo and understudy singer with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. In high school, Mary discovered her love for poetry and French art song. Through the IB Diploma Program, she researched selections from Ariettes Oubliées in a 4,000 word analysis. During her first year at Eastman, Mary eagerly pursued extracurricular performance opportunities such as the Eastman Queer Alliance recital, an Interfaith Choral Showcase, a Benefit Concert, and a joint non-degree recital. This summer, Mary is looking forward to joining the Isle of Wight Arts League in the Terrific Teen Talent Recital. According to her professor, Mary’s voice is characterized by a “creamy” and “chocolatey” quality with lower and upper extensions, offering versatile expressive and compartmental potential. This year, her student conductors thanked her for her “spirit of openness, kindness, and collegiality” in her choral studies. Mary values depth of expression and artistic excellence in her singing and her life. To contact Mary Reins, please email mreins@u.rochester.edu.
