Do You Want to Be Happy?

By Alex Stoddard

Do you want to be happy? Of course you do you, that’s a silly question. A better question is what’s your secret or key to being happy?

The answer may differ slightly for each of us, but I believe there are universal truths that apply to each and every one of us that will help us be happy, feel fulfilled, and experience joy.

And I think it lays at the heart of performing and why you love to sing, to teach, or do whatever it is you do.

My answer: helping others.

When I got married my Dad gave me one piece of advice that stuck out above all others and one that I have tried to live by for the past 12 years. His advice (and I paraphrase now):

“Happy wife equals happy life. The most selfish thing you can do in life is to make your wife happy. If you want to be happy, put her first, serve her, and make her happy.”

I think the point is obvious. When we help others we feel good. When we lift others, we lift ourselves. When we forget about our own concerns and troubles and think of others first, we find fulfillment and true joy.

The beautiful thing about your gift of music is your ability to inspire and uplift others. You make a difference in other people’s lives by bringing happiness and joy. What a gift you have!

Why is Christmas such a magical time of the year? Yes, the lights are pretty and the music is beautiful–for the most part :). Yes, it’s fun to receive presents, sample the variety of treats, and revel in many holiday parties.

But there’s more to it.

For a short, concentrated amount of time the world is focused not on itself, but others. We’re busy thinking of a spouse, children, a neighbor, a friend, a colleague, a co-worker. We can’t help but be a little happier as we forget about our own worries and concerns and concentrate on others. There’s an almost natural high that comes from thinking of someone else and really trying to give a gift that fits his or her needs or desires. Who hasn’t had that burst of energy and joy deep inside when we give a gift and see a spontaneous smile explode on the face of the recipient?

It’s a simple yet profound concept: the more we give the more we get.

So enjoy this week. Enjoy this next year. Enjoy the journey as you continue to share your gift of music with others throughout the year.

Merry Christmas!
