The 'Why' of Singing

Music awakens the soul. It triggers emotions. It ignites the human flame.

And you have the unique ability through song to unite, inspire, motivate, heal, enlighten, educate, and entertain. That’s the power of music.

Last night more than 40.7 million Americans alone watched the Opening Ceremonies of the London Olympics, with millions of others tuning in through the world. Thousands of athletes, hundreds of performers, and tens of thousands of spectators converged for a grand spectacle of music, dance, and celebration. And what was the common theme that united people across the world, across ethnic lines, and across language barriers?

Music. Dance. Song.

At the end of the ceremonies the crowd and the world united in song led by Sir Paul McCartney and “Hey Jude”. At that moment your political affiliation didn’t matter; nor did your religion, language, race, or other factors. All were united behind the power of music.

And you, as a singer, teacher, and performer, have the instruments and tools to be the voice of that power and inspiration.

But why do you sing?

What you sing is obviously important—whether it be musical theatre, opera, jazz, or whatever genre you love. But why you sing it is even more important. I heard a speech recently where the speaker said, “The what informs. But the why transforms. The what teaches us what to do. The why inspires our soul.” While the speaker wasn’t talking about music or singing, his words apply directly to all performers or teachers.

The ‘what’ of singing will help you learn notes, memorize words, perfect technique, and master the music on the page.

But the ‘why’ of singing will do so much more. When you sing with purpose and a deep understanding of why you sing, you’re doing more than simply reciting words and notes. You carry the music of the page to the soul; you connect to the audience and become an instrument of inspiration.

So why do you sing? This month we’ll be collecting responses from singers young and old. Tell us in 200 words or less the reasons and motivation that give you the courage to stand on stage and perform. We’ll publish as many responses as we can in this blog throughout the month of August. Email me at alex@auditionsplus.com, post your comments directly to this entry, or message me at www.Facebook.com/auditionsplus.

I look forward to hearing from you!
