Please tell our readers about your career highlights, so far.
I was recently named Kammersängerin (honorary doctorate) from the State Theater of Stuttgart where I was formerly a member of the critically acclaimed ensemble. I’m currently making my San Francisco Opera debut as Ulrica in A Masked Ball. Since 2003 I have been re-invited each summer to the Arena di Verona as Amneris in Aida.
Do you have a motto by which you live?
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
What are your goals for the next five years? The next 10 years?
My goals for the next five years are to continue to aspire to mastery in the craft of vocal performance and to assist in the discovery of new and exciting means of expression for this noble art form, as well as humbly pursue the paths that unite the true Divinity (God) with Diva.
How do you handle the inevitable rejection that is part of a singer’s life?
I take issue with this question. Not every audition will result in a contract and not every performance will result in rave reviews. However, to label such efforts and opportunities as rejections is false. If the singer’s objective is to sing, then every opportunity to sing is the opportunity to learn, grow and embrace one’s own individual artistry. Imagine if Wagner had considered himself rejected because he was not appreciated by those who prefer Mozart. Each voice resides in a uniquely created vessel, so each voice has its unique strengths. Not every gift will be appreciated or applauded by everyone, but every gift will be appreciated and applauded by someone, somewhere. Such is the reality not only for the singer’s life, but for every life.
What is your favorite article you’ve read in Classical SingerI, and why?
“Yoga and Emotions for Singers” by Suzanne Jackson. I have been practicing yoga for the past year and it has really allowed my to tap into my own power and sense of self as a person and an artist.
