Home Series: “My Energy Color is Red!”

Soprano and voice teacher Andrea DelGuidice has extensive performing experience in opera, opera directing, plus a robust voice studio, and leadership roles in programs of study and opera companies. It’s no wonder that she lends her creative flair and attention to detail to her home as well.

Of her New York City apartment, she says, “I was so fortunate to find this apartment which is situated right across from Tryon Park with a beautiful view. My students look out onto the park. I also have an entryway which serves as a waiting area. Inwood is a wonderful neighborhood, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. It accommodates up to 10 people at a time (in the case of a rehearsal).”

Her apartment features bold color choices, as evidenced by her color drenched red studio, including a red grand Otto Altenburg piano. She says, “My energy color is red! It has been so throughout my singing career as well. My studio is bright and very ‘theatrical!’ My piano is also red! Students tell me the room lifts their spirits!”

Her energy is clear in her bold color choices, from the red of the piano and studio room, to the cheerful yellow of the kitchen. She creates an uplifiting environment, “People often say it suits my ‘big Italian personality!’ My studio has wonderful acoustics serving my big voices perfectly. I am also an accomplished pianist and play most of the repertoire—I only ask students to bring a pianist for contemporary repertoire or Wagner.”

DelGuidce’s students love her space for lessons too. She notes, “The acoustics are excellent. The room is resonant, and not too boomy. When students invite others to attend their lessons, I have a comfy chair which does not take up the singer’s space. The kitchen is attached to the waiting area, and students are welcome to fill their water bottles, etc. There is a table as well if they have work to do as they wait. My musical theater singers often bring their screens and do self-tapes in the space as well. I have many operatic and musical theater scores which makes it convenient for singers. When renting, many teachers do not have scores available in their space. I am also able to keep my hour rate reasonable without the need to rent space.”

Rental rates for rehearsal studios are notoriously high in New York City, and it’s common for voice teachers to teach from their homes. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a space where they can practice, let alone teach! DelGuidice says, “ I love the fact that my neighbors love the singing! I am considerate not to teach after 8:00 pm or before 10:00 am. I sometimes have Sunday rehearsals. I let my neighbors know and appreciate it is a resting day for many. They still don’t mind! I use a curtain to divide the waiting area and the studio. I ask students to arrive 5 minutes before their scheduled time to allow privacy for each students allotted time.”
