Daniel Helfgot

Daniel Helfgot is the author of The Third Line: The Singer as Interpreter, now available through Classical Singer magazine in paperback. Helfgot is the director of opera at UMKC and the director of the Middle America Opera Apprentice Program and has directed over 160 productions of opera, operetta, zarzuela, cabaret and tango in the USA, Canada, Germany, Austria, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Argentina.

Joyce DiDonato has been hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as the Rossini mezzo-soprano for the next generation and is acclaimed as "a singer of considerable accomplishment and even greater promise." Winner of the 2002 Richard Tucker Foundation Award, DiDonato's 2002-2003 season includes performances of Sister Helen Prejean in New York City Opera's new production of Dead Man Walking, for which she received the prestigious award of "Debut Artist of the Year," The Cunning Little Vixen at the Royal Opera House under the baton of Sir John Eliot Gardiner (see photo), Rosina at the New National Theater of Tokyo, Cherubino and Cenerentola with the Paris Opera, a Pesaro Festival debut singing the title role of Rossini's Adina, a recording of Handel duets for the EMI label, and a European concert tour of "Les Nuits d'ete" with Mark Minkowski and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.

Future projects include Il Barbiere di Siviglia in San Francisco and Houston, Maria Stuarda in Geneva, the role of Idamante in new productions of Idomeneo at the Netherlands Opera and the Aix en Provence Festival, and a recital tour culminating with her Wigmore Hall debut in London.

On recording, Ms. Mills may be heard on RCA’s recording of Sondheim’s Follies, New World Records’ Grammy award-winning Candide, Newport Classic recordings of Handel’s Muzio and Scarlatti’s Ishmail, Arabesque Records’ recording of Schubert’s “Auf dem Strom” and Strauss’ “Alphorn” with David Jolley, horn, and most recently her solo CD of American song “Always it’s Spring” from VAI. On video she may be seen on “The New Sousa Band on Stage at Wolf Trap” with conductor Keith Brion. Her performance of Cunegonde at the New York City Opera was seen on a national telecast on PBS’s “Live from Lincoln Center.” Last summer Ms. Mills appeared as Aurelia Havisham in the much anticipated new production of Dominick Argento’s Miss Havisham’s Fire by Opera Theatre of St. Louis and was hailed by The New York Times as “the star the vehicle was waiting for.” Ms. Mills is an Associate Professor of Voice at San José State University and resides in the Bay Area with her husband, Dr. Thomas Rescigno.
