Build Your Base

Who is your audience? Who are your customers? You need to build an audience and fan base and then perform to them. Remember, it’s not about you, it’s about them!

Here’s a note from one reader, Eric S., who definitely has it right. His daughter is a professional classical music singer :

Hey Singers!
Think of your fans and their email addresses as your clientele, or your house list. What’s the lifetime value of your client or customer? Huge and maybe 30 years or more. Therefore, CD sales are critical to building and maintaining that audience. The more a singer performs the bigger their fan base becomes and soon they have “their” audience. That’s why singers tour: build “their” audience who will buy that CD. Touring creates the brand. That audience has demographic characteristics. Jenny Rivera who just died in a plane crash was huge in the Latin sector but had no audience in the Anglo sector. She played to her audience. Singers should define their audience and play to that audience [aka customers]. Elvis was famous for playing to his audience as were the Beatles.

Think and sing for your audience. Love your audience. Own your audience. Bow to your audience. Sing their favorite songs and they will love you.
