The Perspective of Judge – CS Convention

We’ve asked singers, teachers, students, parents, and judges at the Classical Singer Convention in Chicago, IL this weekend to write about their experiences. The following is from Roosevelt University faculty member Judith Haddon.

The Classical Singer Competition is a well run very nurturing competition. It is one of the only College Fairs that is completely designed for the singer. Young singers have the opportunity to network with dozens of Universities both for undergraduate and graduate studies. They have a chance to meet and do master classes with the top musicians in their field. The heads of voice departments and teachers are completely accessible for an entire weekend. The students and their parents can ask dozens of questions without having to travel all over the country. This is an exceptional opportunity for singers and their families

Then it comes to the competition. It ranges from high school to graduate school. As I have spent two whole days being once of the judges I thought it might be helpful to share what I might be looking for. First I watch for an element of confidence. I watch the demeanor of the student from what they wear to how they announce their name and the title of the piece. I also look at their repertoire choices. I never think it is better to do the hardest piece I have ever heard. I would rather hear something that is age appropriate and done very well. Obviously talent is important, but just as important is preparation, language, artistry, and overall presentation. A student should know every single word he or she is singing. A general concept is not enough.

I would like to remind everyone that this is a very subjective process. And that even if someone is not chosen for the finals it does not mean that they are not competitive. It is very brave of everyone to take a chance. Everything that we do along the way is a learning process. Although wining is wonderful….learning is just as valuable.
