Oper Leipzig

The Oper Leipzig represents the roof for a four-branch house, consisting of the Opera, Leipzig Ballet, Musikalische Komödie and Junge Oper Leipzig. Located in the opera house (Opera & Leipzig Ballet) in the center of Leipzig and in Haus Drei Linden (Musikalische Komödie) in the Lindenau district, it follows the tradition of musical theater in Leipzig for over 325 years. In 1693 the first opera house on the Brühl was opened as the third bourgeois music theater in Europe after Venice and Hamburg. The world-renowned Gewandhaus Orchestra has played in all opera and ballet performances since 1840. Prof. Ulf Schirmer has been General Music Director of the Oper Leipzig since the 2009/10 season. Under his musical direction, particularly the works of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss move into the focus of the repertoire. With the appointment of Ulf Schirmer as artistic director of the Oper Leipzig in the 2011/2012 season, the artistic collaboration between the opera and the Gewandhaus orchestra received new impulses.
