Noperas!

Under the mediation of Fonds Experimentelles Musiktheater (feXm), three theatres join forces over three seasons to form an alliance. Operating under the label “NOperas!”, they realize a joint project each season, which is performed at all three theatres while being given the opportunity for continuous further development. Within the framework of flexible rehearsal times tailored to the project, “NOperas!” opens up ways to develop the performance in direct connection to the rehearsal process.

As in their other productions, the theatres participate with ensemble, instrumentalists, stagecraft and trades. In addition, feXm and the theatres provide a production budget of up to 200,000 euros, which is managed by the project team itself. feXm acts as co-producer of the theatres, provides its own dramaturgical supervision, organizational support and public relations.

The annual project is decided by a jury of experts, with the participation of the theatres and the sponsors, on the basis of a call for proposals issued in the spring of each year. Applications are open to teams throughout Europe sharing responsibility for the interplay of the artistic levels involved. The group must include a production manager who is responsible for organizational management and for the administration and accounting of financial resources.

Funding is open to concepts that venture beyond the traditional opera genre, involving the local theatre ensembles in a reexamination of the relationship between musical sound and space, language and theatrical action. This includes process-oriented concepts which transcend stage performance into the realm of social media.
