Elena DeAngelis is a soprano known for her warmth and range of voice, coupled with a lively embodiment of characters and captivating presence. Whether on the grand operatic stage or in an intimate black box theatre, she will move you to tears and stir you with laughter, always bringing a genuine life to the music and character she undertakes.

A native of Buffalo, NY, Elena currently resides in North Carolina. She has charmed audiences at home and overseas in opera, musical theatre, oratorio and in recital. Degree work includes the University of North Carolina-Greensboro School of Music (MM-vocal performance), the D’Angelo School of Music at Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA (BM-Ed –voice), and additional training at the Wesley-Balk Music-Theatre Institute in St. Paul, MN, the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, and the American Singers’ Opera Project in Winston Salem, NC.

A true singing actress, Elena has appeared regionally with Greensboro Opera, Greensboro Symphony, Eastern Music Festival, Greensboro Ballet, Capital Opera Raleigh, North Carolina Opera Company, Long Leaf Opera, Fayetteville University Summer Opera Festival, at the Opera Space Café Theatre and with the Touring Theatre of North Carolina. She spent a season as Artist-in-Residence with Greensboro Opera, and appeared nationally in recitals as a North Carolina United Arts Council Resident Artist grant recipient.

Recognized as a commanding entertainer to the core, Elena is frequently engaged to perform in concerts, presenting opera and classical singing to new audiences as though it were cabaret. She was featured at Salem College’s Visiting Artist series in Winston Salem, NC for several seasons, as well as at area Shepherd’s Centers, Church clubs, and retirement communities. Audiences respond to her effortless ability to draw them in to her performance, no matter the genre she is singing.

Private parties and special events are an opportunity for Elena to share not only her classical favorites, but cross over and share her passion for music from the 20s, 30s and 40s, as well as musical theatre greats. She has been hired for repeat performances during the international Furniture Market in High Point, NC, as well as at regional vineyards for wine tastings, festivals and special events.

Elena is also in demand to bring a special element to weddings and funerals, having been sought out for her beautiful singing as well as her solid reputation to guide the planning of the ceremony music, taking the hassle out of arranging the music so that families may focus on other important elements of their special day. With several years’ experience in liturgical music, she works easily with churches and ceremony venues to provide exactly what individuals want and need, no detail overlooked.

When not singing, Elena maintains an active teaching studio through the Music Center at City Arts in downtown Greensboro, NC. Her students range from amateur to professional, and she regularly has a waiting list for new students.

Elena is most recently a student of the famed Swiss bass-baritone Francois Loup. Her vocal studies began while in high school, having studied with Kathryn Flloyd Camacho. She went on to study with an impressive list of teachers including Barbara Ann Peters, Barbara Caprilli, Dwayne Jorgenson, Virginia Davidson, Louisa Jonason, Robert Wells, Nancy Schiller, and Nancy Walker. Additionally, she has coached with Andrew Harley, Beaumont and Evangeline Glass, Bodo Iges, Arlene Shrut, Elizabeth Bice and Valery Ryvkin.

When time permits, Elena enjoys cooking, cake decorating, all things fashion related, and puttering around in her tiny vegetable garden. Elena is married to bass-baritone Jeffrey Carlson and they have a beautiful five year old girl who’s whole world is a stage.
