Bio

Dr. William Gorton has long experience in helping singers achieve their vocal and artistic goals. Many of his students have proceeded to singing careers. With a Masters degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College, and a doctorate in Conducting from Arizona State University, William has extensive experience as a performer in opera, oratorio, art song, and classical Broadway. His pedagogical approach is notably free from physical manipulations, focusing on freedom of vocal production and mental flexibility as a foundation for singing in any genre. He is also excellent at remediating vocal problems and pathologies in singers of all ages, helping students to find their "true" voice by eliminating bad habits. Dr. Gorton was Assistant Professor at Millikin University before moving to New Jersey to conduct the New Jersey MasterChorale. He founded the Greater Philadelphia Choral Society in 2021.

Here are a few student testimonials:

Without a doubt, my three and a half years of study with William has made a difference in my vocal performance. My range has expanded dramatically, and my vocal quality has vastly improved. I am now performing with the Children’s Theater Network Conservatory, North Bay Opera, and am represented by North Bay Entertainment. As long as I have this resource available to me... I will continue to take advantage of all William Gorton has to offer. I highly recommend William to singers of all styles.

He knew immediately upon my coming into the studio what my problems were, and how to fix them.

--Lisa Berry

William Gorton has opened up for me a world of music I never believed existed. In the last two years my range has increased, as well as my self-confidence, and best of all he has shown me how to sing with power and space without straining my vocal cords!

--Heather Anderson

I have just recently started studying with William. It has been a while since I’ve studied, and I can’t believe the changes that are already occurring with my voice. William is an excellent teacher, who really seems to understand all that’s going on with me as well as being able to express his ideas clearly to me. His knowledge of operatic repertoire seems extensive which really helps me, as I am now a tenor, too. One month ago, I thought I was a baritone, as did all of my past voice teachers. William recognized at once that this was not the case; and the rest is history.

--Paul Stokey

I have taken lessons for six and a half months from William. I had no background and was truly a beginner! His patience and knowledge have astounded me. He is supportive and seems to always know just the right exercise or analogy to help me out. It’s great fun!

--Sandy Vandenburgh

I really enjoyed seeing you work with Christina today. Seemed to be very well paced, especially so since it was only a 30 minute lesson...Our students are fortunate to have you as a teacher!
