Bio

Janet Ellis, contralto, has been heard and seen in Palm Beach Opera’s production of Der Fleigender Hollander and as Dame Quickly with Opera Illinois. Miss Ellis created the role of Ma Dowling in the Lincoln Center Festival world premiere of Patience and Sarah. Other productions include: Frau Marie in Der Fliegender Hollander with Opera Delaware and Dame Quickly in Falstaff with Gold Coast Opera and the New Jersey Opera Festival. With the New York City Opera, she has portrayed Katisha in The Mikado, Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore, and, with the Educational Tour, Hata in The Bartered Bride. Ms. Ellis has performed Rebecca Nurse in The Crucible with Tulsa Opera, Marguerite in La Dame Blanche with Eve Queller’s Opera Orchestra of New York, Azucena in Il Trovatore with the Inter Mountain Opera Company and Pablo Elvira, and the Maestra della Novice in Suor Angelica with Dallas Opera. Internationally, Ms. Ellis has sung in Germany, Mexico, Israel and Spain including a production of Daughter of the Regiment in the Canary Islands. Her orchestral performances have taken her from Richmond to Memphis to a recital tour in Puerto Rico. Miss Ellis has degrees from Texas State University and University of North Texas and maintains a private voice studio in New York City. Her students have had successful careers in the US and abroad including Broadway, Metropolitan Opera, regional opera and musical theatre companies and many concert venues. She now offers private voice lessons, coaching on style, interpretation and presentation, master classes. She has in person and on line options.
