Baritone SeungHyeon Baek is quickly gaining recognition throughout the American opera circuit as an artist of significant talents and versatility,
applauded for his “full, generous baritone voice” and his considerable “histrionic abilities combined with his rich artistry.”
2022-2023 Season, Baek joined the roster of the prestigious Metropolitan Opera for their productions of La bohème and Falstaff and returned for covering Marcello in La Bohème for their 2023-2024 Season. This season, Baek is going to return to The Metropolitan Opera to cover Marcello in La Bohème and going to ‘Bravo! Vail Festival’ with The Metropolitan Opera and Philadelphia Orchestra for their La Bohème.
Recently, Mr. Baek made his Hawaii Opera Theater début as Marcello in La Bohème, Pacific Symphony
Orchestra début as Marcello in La Bohème, New Orleans Opera début as the role of Father in Hansel
and Gretel, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor with NJ Festival Orchestra, role début as Scarpia in Tosca
with St. Petersburg Opera, the eponymous Gianni Schicchi with Opera Steamboat, Opera Orlando for the title role in Rigoletto, the Canadian Opera Company début for Yamadori/Grand Inquisitor in
Madama Butterfly.
Mr. Baek has made several notable débuts, including with Opera San José as Conte di Luna in
Il Trovatore and with Opera Tampa as Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, after which the Tampa Bay Times praised his “commanding baritone.” He also made a role début as Tonio in Pagliacci with Opera Fairbanks and house débuts with Opera North as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly and New York City Opera as Billy Jackrabbit in La fanciulla del West. Additionally, he performed the title role in Gianni Schicchi with St. Petersburg Opera; Lord Enrico Ashton in Lucia di Lammermoor, Sonora in La fanciulla del West, Frate in Don Carlo and as a soloist on their An Evening of Puccini concert with Maryland Lyric Opera, Marcello in La bohème, Tonio in Pagliacci, and Dandini in La Cenerentola with Opera Ithaca;
Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia with MidAtlantic Opera; and Dandini in La Cenerentola with New York City Opera for their Park Concert Series.
As a concert artist, Mr. Baek made his début at Carnegie Hall in G.Fauré’s Requiem, Dvorak’s Te Deum and V.Williams’s Five Mystical Songs with MidAmerica Productions. G.Fauré’s Requiem with Maryland Lyric Opera, Dubois’s The Seven Last Words of Christ with Christian Broadcasting System of New York, Dvorák’s Te Deum with Adelphi Chamber Orchestra, and he made his Lincoln Center Concert début with InterSchool Orchestras of New York in the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
A native of South Korea, SeungHyeon Baek received a Professional Studies degree from Mannes
College of Music. During his professional studies, he performed the title role in Gianni Schicchi, Don
Alvaro in Il viaggio a Reims, and Di Cosimo in the New York premiere of Daniel Catán’s Il Postino.
He also holds a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music where he appeared as Pandolfe in Cendrillon and Peter in Hansel and Gretel as well as Valentin in Faust with the Manhattan School Music Opera Repertory Ensemble. Additionally, Mr. Baek holds a Bachelor of Music degree from ChungAng University in Korea. He won NJ State Opera’s Alfredo Silipigni Competition in 2017 and the Career Bridges Competition in 2015
