Mimmi Fulmer performs repertoire ranging from early music to premieres of works written for her. She has appeared as soloist at the Aspen Music Festival, Kennedy Center, CAMI Hall, the Meadowlark Festival, and the Walker Art Center, and her career includes premieres of nine roles in eight operas. Her degree from Princeton University and her family heritage are the foundation for her performance of and research on Nordic songs and contemporary American music.
The granddaughter of immigrants from Finland and Sweden, Ms. Fulmer is an advocate for bringing Nordic songs to American singers. She has presented programs of Nordic repertoire throughout the US, and is the editor of Midnight Sun, a three-volume anthology of songs (including music, phonetics, translations and recordings of the texts) from Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. She was described as “an ideally persuasive artist for this repertoire” in the Journal of Singing for her CD, Voyage Home: Songs of Finland, Sweden and Norway. Ms. Fulmer serves on the board of the Edvard Grieg Society of the Great Lakes.
Her book about “Vision and Prayer” by Milton Babbitt was published in 2016. She has recorded with the Centaur, Albany, Innova, and CRI labels, and her solo CD, About Time, was called “a gratifying testimony to …composers in America” by Opera News online.
Ms. Fulmer is Professor of Voice and Opera at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her students are enjoying success around the world with companies including the Metropolitan Opera, Frankfurt Opera, Vienna State Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and Glyndebourne, and in musical theatre careers encompassing leading roles on Broadway and national tours. Her alumni are pursuing careers as educators at the school and university levels, including University of Tampa, Wingate University, and Roberts Wesleyan University.
