Robert Guarino has been tenor soloist in opera, oratorio, recital, and with symphony orchestras throughout the country. He has appeared with the Boston Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Harrisburg Symphony, The Opera Orchestra of New York, the Princeton Pro Musica, and the New Haven Chorale. He has been soloist in all the major concert halls of New York City—at Carnegie Hall in Bach’s B Minor Mass with the National Chorale, Bach’s St. John Passion, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C Minor, Berlioz’ Requiem with the St. Cecilia Chorus, and Handel’s Messiah with the Masterwork Chorus. He has been the tenor soloist for the National Choral Council’s “Messiah Sing-In” at Avery Fisher Hall. He has also appeared at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center,.
Mr. Guarino has sung leading roles with Michigan Opera, New York City Opera, Atlanta Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and the Opera Festival of New Jersey. He has won critical acclaim for roles spanning Renaissance to Contemporary—from Opera to Musical Theater. A frequent guest at music festivals throughout the country, Mr. Guarino has been a soloist at the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, Tanglewood, The New London Music Festival, PepsiCo Summerfare, the Wilmington Music Festival, and the Smithsonian Institution Chamber Music Festival.
Mr. Guarino’s first solo CD was released in 1996 on the Newport Classic label. It is the first complete recording of “36 Arie di Stile Antico,” a collection of Italian art songs by Stefano Donaudy. He is also featured on another Newport CD singing songs of Amy Beach and William Mayer. Mr. Guarino’s many awards include first prize in both the Washington International Competition for Singers and the Liederkranz Foundation Awards. He has served as a judge for prestigious vocal competitions including the Paul Robeson Voice Competition and for three consecutive years was invited to be a member of the National Fulbright Award Selection Committee.
Robert Guarino is Professor Emeritus of The College of New Jersey. While at the College, in addition to teaching private voice lessons, he conducted the College choir for ten years, founded their Collegium Musicum, a small vocal and instrumental ensemble specializing in renaissance and baroque music, and was producer/director of the opera program. Mr. Guarino also served on the voice faculty of Westminster Choir College. He was Supervisor of Music for the New Jersey Governor’s School of the Arts and conductor of its vocal ensemble. In 2006 he was invited to conduct the NJ region II High School Honors Choir. Mr. Guarino currently directs the Stonington Madrigal Singers and Recorder Consort, an ensemble he founded in 2013 that serves eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Mr. Guarino has a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from The University of Rhode Island and a Master’s Degree in Voice Performance from the Manhattan School of Music.
