Born of musical parents, John Stewart spent five years in the American Boychoir. While earning a degree in composition at Yale he was the assistant director of the Yale Glee Club for three years, directed the Apollo Glee Club and was a member of the famed Whiffenpoofs. After an MA in Composition at Brown where he was the assistant director of the choral groups, and time at the New England conservatory, he made his debut as Pinkerton at the Santa Fe Opera. A twenty five year career followed as leading tenor in over 50 roles at the NY City Opera, the Met, Opera theatre of St. Louis and many other companies and orchestras in the U.S. and abroad. At Washington University he was the Director of Vocal Activities, teaching voice, vocal pedagogy and literature, and conducting the operas, and the Concert Choir of Washington University.
Mr. Stewart is in frequent demand as clinician and judge, as well as for his inspiring master classes. In the summer months he conducted at the festival of the Arts in Spearfish, S.D. and has taught at the University of Miami’s Summer in Salzburg program.
