Music at Allegheny combines the study of performance, history, and theory in a setting that engages the entire academic community. Departmental courses accommodate a wide variety of musical backgrounds so that students can either begin or continue their musical development in any or all of these areas.
The department’s mission is to provide outstanding musical experiences for all students, regardless of their academic major or minor. Beyond classroom instruction in music disciplines, students build community through performances in large choral and instrumental ensembles, as well as in chamber music groups such as woodwind quintets, brass ensembles, string quartets, and more.
The strength of Allegheny’s music program can be measured by the way music pervades the campus: one out of every 6 students is actively involved in a vocal or instrumental performance group. The department is deeply committed to the continuing musical education of majors and non-majors alike.
