Description

Founded in 1873, Shorter University is a Christ-centered, four-year liberal arts university committed to excellence in education. U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review annually include Shorter on their lists of best Southeastern Colleges. The university offers traditional bachelor’s degrees in 40 areas of study, as well as online associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs.

The Edith Lester Harbin Department of Music offers a conservatory-like experience within a traditional liberal arts institution—the best of both worlds. Our voice, piano, and instrumental students have consistently ranked at or near the top of regional and national competitions for many years. Furthermore, our music education majors are frequently sought after by prospective school systems before they reach graduation.

In addition to private study, Shorter music students all participate in departmental ensembles. The Shorter Chorale is an auditioned choir and recognized as one of the best ensembles in the region. Other ensembles include the Shorter Chorus and Symphonic Band.

The Opera Theatre and Musical Theatre each produce two major works each academic year. Recent productions include Into the Woods, The Fantasticks, Songs for A New World, Old Maid and the Thief, and Suor Angelica. The accomplishments of our students and graduates demonstrate the success of our programs.
