Description

The University of Alabama School of Music is a comprehensive institution, serving nearly 400 majors in a variety of disciplines. The UA Opera Theatre is a rigorous training program designed to prepare young artists for careers in opera and musical theater. The program has received national attention through multiple placements in the National Opera Association’s Collegiate Opera Scenes and Opera Production Competitions. In addition to high-level voice training by a superb faculty of performers, the opera curriculum includes experience in acting, dance, yoga, stage combat, improvisation, and music business; five productions are performed annually, ranging from full-length productions with orchestra to jazz evenings and student-directed scenes. The UA Opera Theatre hosts the Druid City Opera Workshop, a summer young artist intensive, and the area offers doctoral secondary concentrations in Stage Direction and Vocal Pedagogy. The past opera season included presentations on Alabama Public Television, and the world premiere of Michael Ching’sRSBE: Remove Shoes Before Entering.
