The Verlängertes Wohnzimmer Theater is a small off-theater stage in Berlin-Friedrichshain. It has existed in its current form since 2010, but the building has been used as a theater stage since 1967, first by the Friedrichshain Studio Stage, then as a variety and cabaret stage. From 1911 to 1965, the premises housed a cinema, which was affectionately known as the "narrow towel" because of its tubular floor plan. The characteristic elongated shape has been preserved in the auditorium with its 60 seats and extends seamlessly into the cozy foyer with its neighborhood pub flair.
The Verlängertes Wohnzimmer Theater sees itself as a laboratory and free space for the performing arts, independent theater and cabaret. The program presents post-dramatic and naturalistic works; musicals and folk plays are represented as well as scenic collages, dance, cabaret and performance. In addition to the performances on the weekend, Tuesday evenings are a highlight in the neighborhood: poetry slam, improv comedy and the open living room or the open stage.
Since its founding, the Verlängertes Wohnzimmer theater has been organized as an association. The members include professional theater artists, trained actors, experienced amateurs from a wide variety of backgrounds, as well as theater newcomers who volunteer for the association.
